Reduction tips

Using our 'Reduction Top 10', you can immediately lower your energy consumption and at the same time help to combat climate change. You can easily save up to hundreds of euros each year through these simple measures! Also have a look at these interesting videos on 'the new way of driving'.
  1. Buy energy-efficient appliances, appliances labelled with the A-label are the most ecologically aware. Turning down the thermostat just one degree during daytime will save you an average of seven percent on your heating bill. (approximately €45,- per year).
  2. Set the thermostat to 13 to 15 degrees an hour before you leave or go to sleep. Your home will not cool down significantly and will heat-up without needing a great deal of additional energy in the morning. On an annual basis this will cut down your heating bill with about €35,-. However, in houses built after 1994, it is more energy-efficient to leave the thermostat on the same temperature during night-time, as opposed to turning up the heat in the morning. Overall these houses have adequate isolation and are regularly equipped with floor- or wall radiation heating.
  3. The stand-by mode of appliances can cost an average household around €100,- a year. With a multiple-socket fitted with an on/off button, all appliances can be turned off simultaneously. Beware of other unnoticed energy-users such as: dimmers, transformers and chargers.
  4. We spend an average of 8,5 minutes under the shower each time. One minute less will save both water and energy. An energy-efficient showerhead will save an average household €30,- per year.
  5. Use energy-efficient light bulbs: the cost of purchase may be a little higher, but you will indirectly earn them back due to the moderation in your energy use. Imagine if you were to replace five 60 watt light bulbs which are illuminated an average of 3 hours a day with their energy-efficient counterparts, you will save around €55,- a year. Don’t needlessly leave the lights on, a useful tool could be a light sensor that detects movement.
  6. Transfer to green energy; Convince your sports club, school, university, city council, or employer to also transfer to green energy.
  7. Place your refrigerator in a cool area, at a remote distance from radiators, the kitchen stove and sunlight. Always place a refrigerator at least ten centimetres of the wall. This appliance will use less energy if the heat it produces can easily released. Keep the back of your refrigerator clean and dust-free.
  8. Floor-isolation of the ground-floor will save you 190 m3 of gas annually (for a 50m2 surface). It also provides a comfort: a constant temperature and less humidity in your home. Under-floor isolation will save you 140 m3 of gas.
  9. If you replace your regular windows with isolation windows you can save an average of 450 to 650 m3 of gas a year (based on an average second and ground-floor).
